Inspiration from a DDay Hero and a Penpal

I spent about a week, emmersed in WWII history in Normandy. I had the honor of speaking with Ethel Wetschenskey, a 95-year-old whose brother was a DDay hero, buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.

A Frenchman wrote to her after seeing the date of her brother's death, July 11, was the same as his birthday. They have been penpals for over a decade now.

It was a hard article to write, since I have been to the places Ethel's brother fought at: Utah beach, Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Cherbourg. But it was a privlege.

Read the full article in the Kansan here.
